Whether attempting to stem boredom during a long trip or experiencing the excitement of exploring historical time periods or far-away places, the pre-digital toy View-Master served as a transport to another place. Like writing, it was a way of seeing. Along the way, it provided delight and entertainment.
The Look Books subscription series places this old experience in a new context, presenting five hybrid literary and visual texts that can be read by inserting them into the viewer and advancing the frame forward.
Over the course of the year, subscribers will receive one viewer and five reels, mailed out bimonthly.
REELS IN THIS SERIES
REEL #1: TERESA CARMODY & MADISON CREECH
Because you may never come to DeLand, we bring DeLand to you. This is a place as circular as this View Master reel. Everything spreads all the time, inside and out. The woman who passes by your house every day at noon might actually be a ghost. The ghost in the cemetery may be still alive. Bright colors, many greens, the world is not as it seems.
Madison Creech works with fiber arts and Teresa Carmody works with sentences. For this project, we conferred about the ever-present death and growth of Central Florida, before walking our separate ways around DeLand to make seven images (Creech) and seven sentences (Carmody). Later, we paired the images with the text, almost exactly in the order that we presented them to each other.
DeLand. Something somewhere is not quite right, but that’s all right.
REEL #2: DEREK BEAULIEU
Kursiv #1-7 exhaustively uses every letter from a single sheet of dry-transfer lettering to create a suite of fragile typographic snowflakes. Each image, suspended within glassine film as part of a View Master slide, suggests a logo for an impossible business – or an alien script – caught between one dead media and another.
REEL #3: SAWAKO NAKAYASU & NAOMI REIS
SOFT WHITE FEEL FLOWER RUN
In SOFT WHITE FEEL FLOWER RUN, some of the words from a poem by Sawako Nakayasu escaped and took up residence between the abstracted folds of Japanese paper in a collaged painting by Naomi Kawanishi Reis. The artists listened and took notes of the rendezvous.
REEL #4: GREG SANTOS
WE ARE YOUNG LIGHTNING
After receiving a mysterious postcard with the enigmatic words "We Are Young Lightning" scribbled on it, Greg Santos has crafted a found poem steeped in nostalgia using words and images cut out from old magazines culled from local used bookstores.
REEL #5: DOUGLAS KEARNEY
THAT LOUD-ASSED COLORED SILENCE: TURNTABLISM
That Loud-Assed Colored Silence: Turntablism is a bonus track to the TLACS series, published in the award-winning collection, Buck Studies (Fence Books, 2016). Through the View-Master interface, this new work encourages the reader to consider a blend of book and turntable, sight and sound, reading and scratching.
